The Kickstart course format

About the Kickstart course format and its specific course settings.

Updated over a month ago

The core of the Kickstart plugin is the Kickstart course format. It introduces a streamlined workflow for creating, templating, and managing courses in Moodle, enhancing the experience for both teachers and students.

Course settings

When selecting Kickstart format as the course format, the following additional options become available:

  • Templates view

Choose how available templates are displayed:

    • Tiles – visual blocks showing background images and short info.

    • List – compact view with text-based entries.

  • Student instructions

Enter a message that students will see if the course contains no content. This helps guide learners even in empty courses.

  • Teacher instructions

Enter a message that will only be shown to teachers or other users with editing rights when a course has no content. Useful for internal guidance.

Areas of the Kickstart format

Once the Kickstart format is applied, the default course view is the course template area. You can use the selector in the upper-left corner to switch between different areas.

Note: You don’t need to enable the Kickstart course format to access these areas. Use the course navigation bar and go to More > Kickstart to explore all Kickstart areas and their functionalities while keeping the course's current course format enabled.

  • Displays all available templates for this course. Teachers can explore, preview, and apply a template to structure the course.

  • Shows what enrolled students will see when they open the course before any content has been added or a template applied.

  • Help

Provides built-in guidance on how to use Kickstart features, including templates, views, and settings.

  • Lists other available courses and lets you import either complete courses or specific activities into the current course.

  • Converts the current course setup into a reusable template. All content and settings are automatically included.
